# D Gap

## Short Definition

The running lane outside the tight end—or outside the tackle when no TE is present—the outermost defined gap, owned by the force player on that side.

## Definition

The D-gap is the outermost defined gap in the run-fit structure—the space outside the tight end when one is present, or outside the offensive tackle when no tight end is aligned. It belongs to the force player on that side: typically the outside linebacker, overhang safety, or cornerback whose primary run assignment is to set the perimeter and prevent the ball from reaching the edge. Everything outside the D-gap is open field; allowing the ball carrier to reach the D-gap and turn upfield into open space is a significant run-defense failure.

The D-gap is the territory option offenses specifically attack. On quarterback-and-pitch option plays, the pitch key is often the D-gap defender—the quarterback reads whether the D-gap is giving or containing, and pitches to the back if the defender charges upfield to take the quarterback. A D-gap defender who over-pursues the quarterback creates the pitch for a ball carrier with space and a blocker advantage. A D-gap defender who holds outside leverage and takes the pitch forces the quarterback to keep and run against the pursuit coming from inside.

The D-gap's location shifts with the formation. When a tight end is present on the right side, the right D-gap is outside that tight end. When the tight end detaches to the slot, the C-gap becomes the outside gap and the D-gap moves further outside. When no tight end is aligned at all on a side, the D-gap is outside the tackle entirely—the same position the 9-tech defender occupies in a typical edge alignment.

On perimeter runs—outside zone, wide trap, jet sweep—the D-gap is the target. The offensive line's job is to seal the D-gap defender inside while the ball carrier reaches the edge. The D-gap defender's job is to defeat that seal, set the edge, and force everything back inside to where interior pursuit defenders can make the tackle.

## Example

"Outside linebacker is the D-gap player—outside the tight end on the right. Outside zone bounces to the right, the TE tries to reach him. Linebacker fights through the reach, keeps outside leverage. Runner has to cut back inside. D-gap held. The cutback runs into the pursuing linebacker."

## Common Confusion

The D-gap shifts when the tight end is absent, just like the C-gap does. Without a tight end, the C-gap moves outside the tackle—and the D-gap pushes further out still. The gap letters stay anchored to the offensive linemen present, not to fixed yard lines. Formation changes the physical location of every gap letter outside the center.
