A defensive line technique firing aggressively to an adjacent inside gap at the snap—sacrificing contain for interior penetration and run disruption.

## Definition

Crash is a defensive line technique where the lineman fires hard inside at the snap, targeting the adjacent gap with penetration as the primary objective. Rather than engaging the blocker in front of him and maintaining his gap, the crashing lineman beats the block to the inside gap—or goes underneath it—to disrupt the run before it develops or collapse the pocket from an unexpected interior angle.

Crash is most often used in gap-exchange schemes where the interior lineman's aggressive inside movement is designed to complement a linebacker or outside rusher filling the vacated outside gap. One player crashes inside; another player fills outside. The two movements exchange responsibilities and create misdirection in the protection.

The risk of a crash is the same as any penetrating technique: if the lineman gets reached or cut off, he's out of the play and the gap he crashed into becomes a lane.

## Example

"3-tech crashes inside on the snap—goes underneath the guard's reach block and penetrates the A-gap. The ball carrier hits the B-gap where the 3-tech was. The Mike linebacker had the B-gap in the exchange. The crash created the interior disruption; the linebacker cleaned it up."

## Common Confusion

Crash and slant are used interchangeably. A slant is a controlled angle change—the lineman redirects to an adjacent gap at a moderate angle. A crash is a more committed, more aggressive interior charge—the lineman attacks the adjacent gap hard with penetration as the explicit goal. The crash sacrifices containment for interior disruption.
