C.P. is shorthand for coaching point—an annotation used in practice scripts, film sessions, and game-plan materials to flag a specific technical or tactical detail the coaching staff considers essential rather than incidental. When a coordinator writes C.P. next to a diagram or a drill in the script, he's marking a teaching moment he intends to stop and emphasize rather than let the players discover through repetition.

Coaching points can be technical—footwork requirements, hand placement on a block, release technique on a press route—or tactical—where a defender should be at depth on a given coverage, when to break on the ball, what key determines the run fit. The common thread is specificity: a coaching point identifies the exact detail that separates a correct execution from an incorrect one.

The abbreviation appears frequently in published playbooks, clinic presentations, and coaching manuals as a structural element of football documentation. A play diagram might be accompanied by three or four C.P. annotations, each flagging a different aspect of the play's execution that the coach considers critical. In a practice script, a C.P. next to a team period rep signals the coaching staff to call timeout and address the flagged detail after the play rather than letting the period continue.

The concept is universal across coaching levels and systems—the notation appears in NFL game plans, high school playbooks, and international coaching clinics because its function is the same everywhere.
