# Cover 6

## Short Definition

A zone combining Cover 4 to one side and Cover 2 to the other—4 underneath and 3 deep—typically rotated to the weak side of the formation.

## Definition

Cover 6 combines Cover 4 to one side and Cover 2 to the other—one safety takes his deep quarter on the quarters side and man-matches #2, while the other safety plays a deep half on the Cover 2 side with the corner walling the flat. Three defenders play deep zones; four play underneath. The result is an asymmetric coverage that plays differently to each side of the field.

The name comes from the math: Cover 4 plus Cover 2 equals Cover 6. The quarters side typically goes to the passing strength or the field, where the defense wants pattern-matched coverage. The Cover 2 half goes to the boundary or weak side, where the safety can protect against isolation routes while the corner holds the flat.

Cover 6 is used against offenses that consistently attack one side with route combinations—the quarters side takes away the designed attack with man-match rules while the Cover 2 half protects the backside from big plays.

## Example

"Cover 6 to the field—the field safety is in quarters, man-matching the slot. The boundary safety is in a Cover 2 half, and the corner walls the flat. Watch: the offense attacks the field seam but the safety is already there in man. The boundary route has no one threatening deep on that side."

## Common Confusion

Cover 6 is confused with a simple Cover 3 rotation. Cover 3 plays three deep zones symmetrically. Cover 6 is deliberately asymmetric—one side plays quarters (man-matched), the other plays Cover 2 (zone half). The two sides have different coverage rules, which is what makes Cover 6 a distinct call rather than just a rotated Cover 3.
