# Cover 4

## Short Definition

Four-deep coverage where each defender owns a quarter of the field and pattern-matches vertical threats—deep integrity at the cost of intermediate coverage.

## Definition

Cover 4 places four defenders deep—two safeties and two cornerbacks—each responsible for a quarter of the deep field. Three defenders cover underneath zones. The structure is 4-deep, 3-under.

The coverage's deep integrity is its primary strength. Four deep defenders means there's no void between the safeties and no undefended deep corners. Four verticals—the concept designed to attack Cover 2's seam—has a defender assigned to each of the four vertical routes before the snap.

The pattern-match technique governs post-snap adjustments. The safety reads #2 on his side at the snap: if #2 releases vertically, the safety takes him in man coverage. If #2 releases short into the flat, the safety squeezes toward #1, who now has the safety's support. The cornerback adjusts based on the safety's movement—trail man on #1 if the safety takes #2 vertical, wider coverage with safety help if the safety squeezes.

The weakness is underneath. With three defenders covering the intermediate zone, crossing combinations and mesh concepts can put two receivers in adjacent zones against limited coverage. The defense trades deep security for intermediate vulnerability.

## Example

"Four deep defenders spaced out before the snap—that's Cover 4. The two safeties each own a quarter, the two corners have the outside quarters. Four verticals: each route has a defender in its area. To beat quarters you need seam-cross combinations, not just deep routes."

## Common Confusion

Cover 4 and quarters are the same coverage—the terms are interchangeable. The confusion arises because "quarters" is sometimes used to describe the pattern-match technique executed within Cover 4, but quarters describes the structure itself. Cover 4 is the structural name; quarters is the schematic name; they refer to the same defense.
