# Cover 3

## Short Definition

A flag football coverage using all 5 defenders in zone assignments—no rusher, 2 short and 3 deep—using the pass clock as the only pass rush.

## Definition

Cover 3 in flag sacrifices all rushing pressure in exchange for maximum coverage depth. All five defenders drop into zone: two in short zones, three splitting the deep field into thirds.

With no rusher, the 7-second pass clock becomes the defense's only pressure mechanism. Most effective in critical down-and-distance situations, prevent scenarios, or when coverage athletes are significantly superior.

## Example

"They dropped everyone into Cover 3—the QB had seven seconds but every route had a body on it. He forced a throw that the linebacker was already waiting for."

## Common Confusion

Using Cover 3 as a base defense against skilled receivers and patient QBs. Without a rush, 7 seconds is enough time for elite QBs to find zone gaps.
