# Cover 2

## Short Definition

Two safeties splitting the deep field with five defenders underneath—the deep middle seam and deep corners are its structural vulnerabilities.

## Definition

Cover 2 divides the deep field between two safeties—each owns one half, splitting roughly at the hash marks. Five defenders work underneath: corners walling the flats on each side, linebackers or inside defenders covering the hook/curl zones and intermediate middle. The structure is 2-deep, 5-under.

The coverage's run-support strength comes from the safeties' proximity to the line of scrimmage. Both can rotate down quickly because their deep responsibilities are limited to one side of the field. Against the pass, Cover 2 is sound underneath—five defenders cover short and intermediate routes with clear assignments.

The structural weakness is the deep middle seam between the two safeties. Neither safety owns the space exactly between them—a vertical route that splits the hash marks finds a void between their half-field responsibilities. The other exploitable window is the deep corner behind the cornerback, who is busy walling the flat rather than sinking to the deep third. A fade route against a corner in flat responsibility is a Cover 2 staple.

The Cover 2 corner has the most technically demanding job in the coverage: wall the flat, reroute #1 inside, then sink to the deep corner if #1 runs a deep route. Bail too early and the flat opens underneath. Stay too long and the corner route behind him is wide open.

## Example

"Watch the safeties split at the snap—one going left, one going right. That's Cover 2. The middle of the field is open between them. The tight end up the seam is about to find exactly that void."

## Common Confusion

Cover 2 and Tampa 2 are used interchangeably. Both are 2-deep structures, but Tampa 2 adds one wrinkle: the middle linebacker sinks into the deep middle seam to take away the void between the two safeties. In base Cover 2, nobody owns that seam. In Tampa 2, the linebacker does. The structural difference is one defender's assignment.
