## Definition

Cover 2 in flag football uses one designated rusher and four coverage defenders—two safeties splitting the deep field and two defenders covering the underneath zones. The structure is 2-deep, 2-under, 1-rush—a more compressed coverage shell than 11v11 Cover 2 because there are fewer total defenders.

The two underneath defenders must cover the entire intermediate zone across the field's width, which is a significant responsibility. Each covers one side—flat to the hash—while the safeties own the deep halves behind them. Against offenses that spread receivers across multiple intermediate windows, the underneath defenders have to make aggressive reads about which receiver to prioritize.

The coverage works best when the rusher gets pressure that forces a quick or inaccurate throw. Without pressure, the quarterback has time to find the seam between the two safeties or the void behind the underneath defenders. The rusher and the coverage are paired—the coverage holds long enough for the rusher to disrupt, and the rusher arrives before the coverage breaks down.

## Example

"Flag Cover 2—rusher identified, two safeties back, two underneath defenders. The quarterback reads two-high and attacks the seam between the safeties with a vertical from the slot. The safety to that side has to come off his half to take it. The outside receiver on the same side is now running a corner route into vacated deep outside space."

## Common Confusion

Cover 2 in flag football and Cover 2 in 11v11 share the two-deep structure but operate differently. In 11v11 Cover 2, a designated rusher is not part of the coverage equation—four down linemen rush while seven defend. In flag Cover 2, the rusher is a counted defensive player. The same coverage name describes different player counts and structural responsibilities depending on the format.
