# Cover 1

## Short Definition

A flag football coverage with 1 designated rusher, 3 man-coverage defenders, and 1 free safety—the most common base defense in competitive flag football.

## Definition

Cover 1 in flag football: one designated rusher applies pressure; three defenders play man-to-man; one deep safety plays free—roaming to provide help, bait intermediate routes, and create interception opportunities.

The free safety commonly plays the '1-Rat technique'—lurking at intermediate depth, reading the QB's eyes, and jumping routes while remaining in position to help over the top.

## Example

"They're in Cover 1—four underneath, the safety free in the middle. Be careful with the seam with that robber lurking."

## Common Confusion

Cover 1 breaks down against elite speed receivers who consistently beat man coverage and get behind the single safety.
