# Counter

## Short Definition

A misdirection run where initial action goes one way and the ball carrier cuts back against the flow, with pulling linemen leading through the cutback lane.

## Definition

Counter uses the defense's aggression against it. The initial steps—the quarterback's ride, the running back's first move—point the run in one direction. Linebackers flow to that side. Then the ball carrier cuts back, and two pulling linemen—typically the backside tackle and the backside guard—come around to lead through the cutback lane.

The timing is everything. The cutback has to happen at the exact moment the defense has committed to the initial flow. Too early, and the linemen haven't cleared; too late, and the pursuit has already turned back. The back reads the pull and follows it—if the puller blocks the first linebacker he sees, the back cuts off that block.

The two-puller design is what separates Counter from Power. Power pulls one lineman to attack the playside immediately. Counter pulls two linemen to the backside after showing run away from them. The additional puller handles the linebacker pursuit and gives the back two lead blocks instead of one.

Counter is particularly effective against defenses that pursue aggressively and get their linebackers moving laterally. The harder the linebackers flow, the bigger the cutback lane becomes.

## Example

"Watch the linebackers—they both flowed hard toward the initial action. Now both pulling linemen have nobody to block. The back hits the cutback lane untouched for eight yards."

## Common Confusion

Counter is confused with a cutback on inside zone. In zone running, the back reads the blocks and cuts back based on where the defensive line goes—it's reactive. Counter is a designed scheme where the cutback is the intention from the start. The pulling linemen are the tell.
