## Short Definition

A route breaking at 45 degrees toward the back corner of the end zone—attacking the void Cover 2 creates behind a cornerback responsible for the flat.

## Definition

The corner route drives vertically to 8-14 yards then breaks at roughly 45 degrees toward the sideline and deep—aiming for the back corner of the end zone or the area behind the cornerback's zone coverage. The break goes up and out rather than flat to the sideline or straight upfield.

The corner route is one of the primary Cover 2 attackers. In Cover 2, the cornerback walls the flat and cannot sink into the deep corner of his half. A receiver who drives vertical and breaks to the deep corner creates a window behind the corner and underneath the safety's half-field zone—precisely between the two defenders' responsibilities.

The route works equally well against man coverage. The inside stem sells a crossing route or post before the 45-degree break outside, getting the man defender to commit inside or straight back. The outside break catches the defender leaning the wrong way with no help behind.

In the red zone, the corner route becomes a back-shoulder or lofted placement—the receiver angles to the back corner of the end zone, the quarterback throws to the spot before the receiver arrives, and the receiver locates the ball over his outside shoulder. Precision placement is everything.

## Example

"Corner is responsible for the flat in Cover 2—he can't drop into the deep corner. The receiver drives vertical, breaks 45 degrees to the back corner of the end zone. Void between the corner walling flat and the safety covering his half. Touchdown. Corner route beats Cover 2 every time the corner stays honest to the flat."

## Common Confusion

Corner route and out route both break toward the sideline but at different depths and angles. An out breaks at 90 degrees flat to the sideline at 5-12 yards. A corner route breaks at 45 degrees upward and outward at 8-14 yards, aiming for depth along the sideline or the back corner of the end zone—not the immediate flat.
