# Contract Extension

## Short Definition

A renegotiation adding new years and guaranteed money to an existing contract before it expires, used to retain players before they reach free agency.

## Definition

A contract extension renegotiates and adds new years and guaranteed money to a player's existing contract before it expires. Teams offer extensions to retain players they value without the cost and competition of open free agency. Players seek extensions to secure long-term financial commitment before their current deal runs out.

Extensions are typically structured with a significant signing bonus and annual base salaries that may rise substantially from the remaining years on the current deal. The new money is prorated across the added years for cap purposes.

The timing of extension discussions relative to the draft is strategically significant. Teams that lock up a cornerstone player before the draft know exactly what cap space they have available for picks. Teams that fail to extend a pending free agent often face the franchise tag or an expensive open-market negotiation the following offseason.

## Example

"They extended him two weeks before the draft—now they know exactly what they're working with on the cap. They don't have to manage his free agency on top of the board."

## Common Confusion

A contract extension is not a new contract. It adds years and money to an existing deal before it expires—the player stays under contract throughout. Teams extend players to prevent free agency; players seek extensions to secure guarantees before their current deal runs out.
