## Definition

Contain is the edge assignment to keep the quarterback inside the pocket on passing plays—preventing him from escaping to open field and turning a called pass into a scramble. The contain player sets the outer boundary of the rush lane, forcing the quarterback to step up, absorb pressure, or throw from inside rather than escaping.

Contain is most critical against mobile quarterbacks. A pass rusher who abandons his contain lane in pursuit of a sack gives a scrambling quarterback a clear outside lane to run. The defense can execute perfectly on every other assignment and still surrender a significant scramble if one contain player overruns the quarterback.

The contain assignment creates a different mentality for the edge rusher. Rather than attacking the quarterback's position, a contain rusher bends the pocket—applying outside pressure that compresses the launch area without vacating the edge. The contain player is the outer wall of the pocket; the interior rushers collapse from inside.

In zone blitz schemes, contain responsibility often shifts from the defensive end to a linebacker or safety, requiring those players to set their edge before making any coverage decision.

## Example

"Edge rusher loses contain—flies past the quarterback chasing the sack. Quarterback steps outside and runs for 14 yards. The rusher was a step from the sack but the assignment was contain, not rush. Contain lost is yards earned by the offense every time."

## Common Confusion

Contain and force are related edge responsibilities. Force turns outside runs back inside on run plays. Contain keeps the quarterback inside the pocket on pass plays. The same edge defender may have both responsibilities triggered by different reads—run or pass.
