# Completion

## Short Definition

A forward pass successfully caught and controlled by an eligible receiver, advancing the ball to the catch point.

## Definition

A completion occurs when the quarterback's forward pass is caught and maintained by an eligible receiver. The receiver must have full control of the ball when the flag is pulled or when they step out of bounds—the ball advancing to the catch point and the next down beginning from there.

Control means the receiver secured the ball—not just touched it. A bobbling catch where the receiver never establishes full control before the flag is pulled may be ruled an incomplete pass at the official's discretion.

## Example

"The quarterback hits the crossing route in stride—the receiver runs through the catch, maintains possession, and is flagged 14 yards past the line. Completion. First down."

## Common Confusion

Catching the ball is not automatically a completion. The receiver must establish and maintain control before the flag is pulled. A ball that touches the receiver's hands without being secured is an incomplete pass, not a bobbled completion.
