# Compensatory Pick

## Short Definition

Additional draft picks awarded to teams that lost more qualifying free agents than they signed—calculated by a formula tied to contract value and playing time.

## Definition

Compensatory picks are additional draft selections awarded by the NFL to teams that lost more qualifying free agents than they gained in the previous league year. The formula compares the value of free agents lost versus signed, using contract value, playing time, and Pro Bowl selections as inputs. Teams that come out net negative receive picks, typically in the third through seventh rounds.

The compensatory pick formula creates a secondary resource stream for teams that develop and lose talent through free agency. Organizations that consistently draft well and produce players who earn significant contracts elsewhere accumulate compensatory picks over time—converting lost free agents into future draft capital rather than simply losing the player with nothing in return.

Compensatory selections are announced by the NFL in March each year, in advance of the draft. Teams with strong scouting departments track their projected compensatory picks through the offseason and factor them into roster-building decisions—sometimes deliberately declining to sign free agents that would offset a compensatory selection they've already calculated they'll receive.

## Example

"They lost three free agents to big contracts and only signed one. The formula calculated a net loss. They received a third-round comp pick and a fifth. Those two picks came from developing players the market valued—the team converted that loss into future capital."

## Common Confusion

Compensatory picks and regular picks are used the same way once awarded—they can be used, traded, or accumulated like any other selection. The distinction is how they're earned: compensatory picks are awarded by formula based on free agent losses, not purchased or selected. They cannot be traded before a specific date each league year.
