# Comp Pick Formula

## Short Definition

The NFL's calculation determining compensatory pick awards—comparing contract value, playing time, and Pro Bowl appearances of free agents lost versus signed.

## Definition

The comp pick formula is the NFL's proprietary calculation that determines which teams receive compensatory draft picks and in what round. The formula compares the value of unrestricted free agents a team lost in the previous league year to the value of unrestricted free agents it signed, using a composite score based on each player's average annual contract value, playing time in their first year with their new team, and any Pro Bowl selections.

If a team's losses exceed its gains by the formula's measure, it receives compensatory picks—typically in rounds three through seven—proportional to the net loss value. A team that loses a high-value free agent and signs no comparable replacement will receive a higher-round comp pick than one that loses a mid-tier player.

The formula creates strategic optionality for front offices. Teams that understand the calculation can deliberately avoid certain free agent signings in order to preserve a projected compensatory pick. Signing a veteran before the formula's calculation deadline can offset or eliminate a comp pick the team was on track to receive. The formula rewards teams that develop and lose talent; understanding it is a front office competency.

## Example

"They let their starting safety walk in free agency and declined to sign a replacement at comparable value. They knew the formula—they were going to get a third-round comp pick for losing him. They built that pick into their draft plan six months in advance."

## Common Confusion

The comp pick formula and the compensatory pick are different things. The compensatory pick is the award itself—an additional selection in the draft. The comp pick formula is the calculation that determines whether a team receives one and in what round. Understanding the formula is what allows teams to manage their free agency decisions to maximize compensatory awards.
