# Closing Line Value

## Short Definition

How your bet's odds compare to the final closing price—the best long-run indicator of betting edge, independent of whether individual bets win or lose.

## Definition

Closing line value (CLV) measures how a bet's odds at placement compare to the odds available just before kickoff—the closing price. If a bettor takes a team at –3 and the line closes at –6, they have +3 points of CLV. If they took the same team at –7 and it closed –5, they have –2 CLV. Consistently beating the closing line is considered the best long-run indicator of a bettor's edge.

The closing line is treated as the most accurate market price because it incorporates the most information—a full week of sharp and public money, all available injury news, and any late-breaking situational factors. The efficient market hypothesis applied to sports betting suggests that the closing line best approximates the true probability of each outcome. Getting better than closing line is therefore evidence of having acted on information before the market fully priced it.

Professional bettors and betting syndicates are evaluated on CLV rather than win percentage. A bettor who hits 53% of his bets but consistently bets into closing lines may simply have been lucky; a bettor who hits 48% but consistently beats the closing line may have genuine edge that hasn't yet manifested in outcomes. Over a large sample, CLV predicts future profitability better than short-term results.

Books limit or ban bettors who consistently beat their closing lines because those bettors are effectively extracting information advantage from the market. Being limited is paradoxically a signal of positive CLV—books only restrict winners.

## Example

"Got them at –3, line closed –6. That's plus-3 CLV—I got three points better than the market's final price. Whether I won or lost this week, I made a good bet. CLV is the long-run scorecard."

## Common Confusion

Closing line value measures the quality of a bet at the time it was placed—not whether it won. A bet placed at –3 that closes at –6 has positive CLV regardless of the game's outcome. The closing line is considered the most efficient market price; getting a better number than that price represents real edge captured, independent of the result.
