# Clamped

## Short Definition

Player and fan slang for locking down a receiver—denying separation and winning the rep. Coaches call the same thing staying in phase or winning at the stem.

## Definition

Clamped is player and fan slang for getting locked down in coverage—a defender who won the rep so completely that the receiver was taken out of the play entirely. A defender who clamps a receiver denies the route, stays in phase, and doesn't give the quarterback a window to throw to. The word implies physical dominance: the defender applied pressure from the line of scrimmage and never let the receiver get comfortable.

The term is the defensive counterpart to cooked—where cooked describes a coverage failure, clamped describes a coverage win. A corner who clamps a top receiver all game has won the individual matchup decisively. Coaches and analysts would describe the same performance as staying in phase, winning at the stem, denying vertical releases, or locking the receiver down in man coverage. Clamped captures the same thing with more attitude.

Clamped entered football vocabulary from the same player and social media culture that produced cooked and strapped—language that emerged in locker rooms, on clip pages, and in 7v7 and practice settings where players narrate their own performances. It travels with the defensive back position specifically because corners and safeties are most clearly matched up in individual contests that produce clean wins and losses.

Like cooked, clamped is evaluative rather than diagnostic—it tells you who won the rep but not how or why. The football underneath it involves release technique, hip movement, leverage maintenance, and catch-point awareness. Clamped is what you call it when all of those things went right for the defender.

## Example

"He ran eight routes and never got open—the corner was on him from the line every time. That's clamped. Coaches would say he won at the stem and stayed in phase all day."

## Common Confusion

Clamped describes complete lockdown—a defender who won the rep entirely, denying separation and staying in phase throughout the route. It is not the same as good coverage that still results in a contested catch or a tough completion. If a receiver catches the ball but the defender was there, that's not getting clamped. Clamped means the receiver had no chance on that rep.
