## Definition

Cheat is a pre-snap alignment adjustment where a defender—typically a safety—repositions based on a formation key, tendencies, or down-and-distance context to give himself a better starting position for what he anticipates is coming. The defender doesn't wait to react; he moves to where the play is likely going before the snap.

A safety might cheat toward trips formation to cut down his pursuit angle on the passing strength. A linebacker might cheat toward the run-formation side when a heavy personnel grouping telegraphs a run play. A corner might cheat his depth against a team that consistently attacks short routes on first down.

The risk of cheating is obvious: if the offense has prepared for it, the cheated alignment creates a liability. A safety who cheats toward trips invites a play-action shot to the single receiver on the opposite side. The defensive coordinator manages how much risk of deception to accept against the positional advantage a cheat creates.

## Example

"Safety cheats toward the trips side before the snap—cuts his pursuit angle in half. Offense runs a quick out to the trips side. Safety is already there. But watch the play-action next series: the offense saw the cheat and attacked the backside safety's vacated space."

## Common Confusion

Cheat is confused with a blitz or a rotation. A blitz is a post-snap action—a defender attacks the quarterback after the snap. A rotation describes where defenders end up in coverage. A cheat is entirely pre-snap—the defender adjusts his starting alignment based on a formation key before the ball moves. It's a positional head start, not a coverage or pressure call.
