# CHASE

## Short Definition

A defensive end technique on a down-block play—the end scrapes flat down the line to take the dive back on zone reads or options rather than rushing upfield.

## Definition

Chase is the end's assignment when the offensive tackle down-blocks inside. Rather than rushing upfield or trying to fight through the block, the end scrapes horizontally—chasing the line of scrimmage in the direction of the run. His job is the dive back on a zone read or option play.

The technique is specifically designed to handle the unblocked end situation in zone-read and option offenses. If the quarterback reads the end as giving him a keep, the end is supposed to take the dive and let the linebackers handle the keeper. Chase tells the end: get the dive, trust your teammates.

Proper Chase execution stays flat—not upfield, not too deep. If the end dips upfield, the dive back can cut behind him. If he goes too deep, the quarterback keeps it and runs where the end was.

## Example

"End is in Chase—watch him scrape flat when the tackle down-blocks. He's taking the dive. Now the linebackers have to get the quarterback if he keeps it."

## Common Confusion

Chase is confused with a crash or slant technique. A crash sends the defender to an adjacent gap aggressively, attacking the line of scrimmage. A chase is a horizontal scrape—the end moves parallel to the line of scrimmage, not through it. The direction is completely different: crash attacks inside at an angle, chase moves flat along the line. The goal is also different: crash disrupts the interior, chase takes an assigned ball carrier.
