## Definition

The College Football Playoff is the postseason championship structure for FBS college football, replacing the Bowl Championship Series in 2014 and expanding from a four-team to a 12-team format in 2024. The CFP determines the national champion through on-field competition rather than polls—ending a century-long tradition in which sportswriters and coaches voted on which team deserved the title without requiring them to play each other.

The BCS era (1998–2013) attempted to guarantee a championship game between the top two poll-ranked teams but still left the selection to computer formulas and human polls, producing controversial omissions and disputed rankings in most years. The four-team CFP, introduced in 2014, created a selection committee that chose the four highest-ranked teams for a semifinal-and-final bracket. While an improvement, four teams still excluded strong programs that finished third or fourth in their conferences, maintaining arguments about selection bias and conference favoritism.

The 12-team expansion, fully implemented in 2024, automatically qualifies the top conference champions and adds at-large selections to round out the bracket. First-round games are played at the home stadiums of higher seeds—a significant departure from the neutral-site bowl model—before the quarterfinals and semifinals rotate among the major bowl sites. The format substantially increases the number of programs with realistic championship paths and reduces the regular-season stakes of a single loss, a trade-off that some see as diluting the regular season's significance.

The CFP's relationship with conference realignment has become one of college football's defining dynamics. The SEC and Big Ten's expansion strategies—adding programs from other conferences to increase their own representation and financial power—are partly driven by the CFP's selection criteria, which reward conference strength.

## Common Confusion

The CFP determines the FBS national champion, but it only covers the top tier of college football. The FCS (Football Championship Subdivision), Division II, and Division III all run separate tournament brackets with their own national champions. When people refer to "the national championship" in college football conversation, they almost always mean the CFP, but the full landscape of college football has multiple simultaneous postseason structures running in parallel.
