## Short Definition

The offensive lineman who snaps the ball and communicates for the line—identifying the Mike, setting protection, and calling stunts before every snap.

## Definition

The center is the only lineman involved in every offensive snap—he delivers the ball to the quarterback to start every play. His real value, though, is as the communication hub of the offensive line. He identifies the Mike linebacker before every snap, sets the protection call, calls out stunts and twists, and coordinates the slide direction with both guards. Every other lineman keys his assignment off the center's pre-snap call.

In the run game, his blocking angle changes with every front—he may be taking on a nose tackle head-up, releasing to a linebacker, or working a combo block with a guard depending on where the ball is going. His ability to recognize defensive alignment and execute the correct combination with the adjacent lineman determines whether inside run lanes open or close.

In pass protection, the center manages the interior and is the first player to identify pressure. A center who can read complex defensive fronts—stunts, late blitzes, twist games—and communicate the right adjustment to five players in three seconds is worth more than one who simply executes well individually. The snap is the prerequisite; the communication is the job.

The center is also the reference point for offensive line alignments. Everything in protection is organized around him—who the center takes, which direction the line slides, where the running back's protection help is assigned. A miscommunication at the center position cascades through every other lineman's assignment on the play.

## Example

"Center points to the Mike pre-snap, calls protection right, identifies the stunting 3-tech and calls it out to the guard. The line slides—the guard picks up the looper before he arrives free. Without that call, the protection is wrong and the quarterback takes a hit before his second read."

## Common Confusion

The center is evaluated on snapping and interior blocking. The position's most important contribution is pre-snap communication. A center who can identify complex defensive fronts and get the right call to five players in three seconds is worth more than one who just blocks well. The snap is the prerequisite; the communication is the job.
