# Center

## Short Definition

The player who snaps the ball to the quarterback and immediately becomes an eligible pass receiver, running routes like any other offensive player.

## Definition

In tackle football, the center is exclusively a blocker after the snap. In flag football, there is no blocking—transforming the center into a hybrid position that combines snapping with full receiving responsibilities.

After executing the shotgun snap, the center releases immediately into their assigned route, most commonly short high-percentage routes that take advantage of proximity to the QB.

## Example

"The center snapped and immediately released—the linebacker was looking at outside receivers and didn't pick up the drag until the center was 6 yards downfield."

## Common Confusion

Teams use their worst athlete at center because 'they just have to snap'—wasting a receiving weapon. Centers who pause after snapping lose their timing advantage.
