The financial room remaining under a team's salary cap after current contracts are accounted for—available for new signings, extensions, and trades.

## Definition

Cap space is the difference between a team's salary cap ceiling and its current cap obligations. A team with significant cap space has financial flexibility to sign free agents, absorb contracts in trades, extend their own players, or absorb prorated bonus money from restructured deals. A team at or near the cap has little room to maneuver without cutting or restructuring existing contracts.

Cap space is a dynamic figure—it changes every time a contract is signed, restructured, voided, or terminated. Teams entering a rebuilding phase often prioritize clearing cap space through releases and trades, accepting short-term performance setbacks in exchange for long-term financial flexibility.

During the draft, cap space directly affects a team's ability to sign the players they select, particularly when trading up acquires higher-slotted picks with larger signing bonuses. It also determines which undrafted free agents a team can sign after the draft concludes.

## Example

"They have $40 million in cap space going into the draft—flexibility most teams don't have. They can trade up, take the best player, and still have room to sign him and fill out the roster."

## Common Confusion

Cap space and salary cap are different. The salary cap is the league-wide limit. Cap space is team-specific—how much room that team has left under the limit after all current contracts are counted. A team at the cap is not over it; they have simply committed their full allocation.
