The total a player's contract charges against the salary cap in a given season—base salary plus prorated signing bonus plus applicable bonuses.

## Definition

A player's cap hit is the total amount their contract charges against the team's salary cap in a given season—the sum of their base salary, prorated signing bonus, roster bonuses, and any other cap-counting compensation in that year.

Because signing bonuses are prorated across the contract's life, the cap hit in any year rarely equals the cash a player actually receives that season. A large signing bonus paid upfront is spread across contract years, creating cap hits that may be lower than cash payment in early years and leave dead cap residue if the player is released before the contract expires.

Cap hit is the number teams and analysts use to evaluate contract efficiency. A player's cap hit relative to his positional value and production determines whether a contract represents good or poor cap management—and directly influences what other roster moves are possible in the same season.

## Example

"His cap hit jumps to $35 million next year—at that number, they either extend him now on a restructured deal or they're facing a very expensive decision in the offseason."

## Common Confusion

Cap hit and total contract value are frequently confused. A five-year $150M deal may carry a $22M cap hit in year one based on how signing bonuses are prorated and how base salaries are structured across the contract years. The headline number is rarely the annual cap charge.
