# C-Gap

## Short Definition

The running lane between the tackle and the tight end—or outside the tackle if no TE is present—the edge defender's primary run-fit responsibility.

## Definition

The C-gap is the running lane between the offensive tackle and the tight end—or outside the tackle if no tight end is present. It is the outermost defined interior gap, and it is typically the edge defender's primary run-fit responsibility. The force player on that side—whether a 5-tech defensive end, an outside linebacker, or an overhang safety—is responsible for setting the edge and preventing the ball from bouncing cleanly through or around the C-gap to the open field beyond it.

On designed perimeter runs—outside zone, sweeps, jet sweeps—the ball carrier is trying to reach or bounce past the C-gap. The offensive line's goal is to seal the edge defender inside, converting the C-gap from a blocking problem into a running lane. When the C-gap defender gets reached and sealed, the run turns the corner and the defense is in pursuit mode. When the C-gap defender sets the edge properly, the run is forced back inside to pursuit angles that the defense has designed.

The C-gap is also where misdirection plays expose the defense. Counter and trap concepts pull linemen to create a hole at or near the C-gap on the backside of the formation—the edge defender who oversets to a run fake often vacates his C-gap responsibility, and the pulling guard seals the pursuit as the ball hits the vacated lane. Edge defenders who maintain gap discipline on misdirection are the most difficult to run counter and trap against.

In pass protection, the C-gap belongs to the offensive tackle. His assignment is to keep the edge rusher—who is aligned somewhere in the C-gap or outside it—from using the C-gap as a rush lane to the quarterback. The tackle's ability to anchor at the C-gap while preventing the defender from winning inside determines the entire edge of the pocket.

## Example

"5-tech sets the C-gap on the strong side—outside the tackle, inside the tight end. Outside zone runs directly at him. Tackle tries to reach him, can't get there. 5-tech holds the gap with his outside arm free, turns the ball back inside to the linebacker. C-gap was never available. That's what edge setting looks like."

## Common Confusion

The C-gap shifts location depending on whether a tight end is present. With a tight end attached, the C-gap is between the tackle and the tight end. Without one, the C-gap is outside the tackle entirely—the widest defined interior gap. The gap letter stays constant; the physical yard line changes with the formation. A defender responsible for the C-gap has to know where the tight end is aligned before he knows where his gap is.
