## Definition

Every NFL team has one bye week during the regular season—a scheduled week off where the team does not play. Fantasy managers whose rostered players are on bye must replace those players in their lineup for that week or they start with zeroes in those slots. Managing bye weeks is one of the foundational roster construction challenges in fantasy football.

Bye weeks are distributed across the season, typically falling in weeks 5 through 14. Not all bye weeks hit at the same time—teams are staggered throughout that window—but certain weeks have historically concentrated byes for many teams simultaneously. Drafting an entire team that shares the same bye week creates a catastrophic lineup hole for one week.

Draft-day bye week management means avoiding concentrating too many key players on the same team or the same bye week. A manager who drafts four players on a single team will have all four unavailable on that team's bye week. Similarly, drafting two elite quarterbacks who share a bye week provides no safety net during that week.

In-season, bye week awareness drives waiver wire strategy. Adding a player the week before their bye to stream through their rest week is a common mistake—the player sits the week you need them most. Adding players with favorable schedules after the bye week is the correct timing. Playoff-eligible weeks—typically weeks 15–17—carry extra weight for players whose teams have good or bad matchups in that final stretch.

"He's on bye this week—perfectly healthy, just not playing. You need a streamer to cover his spot. He's back in your lineup next week, don't even think about dropping him."

## Common Confusion

A player's bye week is not an injury—they are healthy and will return the following week. It is a scheduled NFL rest week built into the regular season schedule. Fantasy managers who confuse a bye week absence with an injury may drop a valuable player unnecessarily or panic-trade a starter who will return to full production the following week.
