## Short Definition

A highly drafted player—typically a first-round pick—who fails significantly to meet the performance expectations that justified his draft position.

## Definition

A bust is a player who, after being selected early in the draft based on significant projected value, fails to deliver that value at the NFL level. The label is most commonly applied to first-round picks because the gap between expectation and outcome is most visible there—a first-round pick carries significant contract cost, draft capital spent, and roster priority. Repeated failure to perform at a commensurate level defines the bust.

Bust is distinct from injury. A player who underperforms because of unavoidable injury is rarely categorized the same way as a player whose physical talent simply did not translate. The label applies most firmly to players whose college production suggested NFL readiness but who could not process the professional game, compete at the required level physically, or sustain the work demands of an NFL career.

The counterpart is a steal—a player who outperforms his draft position significantly and returns more value than the pick that acquired him.

## Example

"Three picks into the first round and already a healthy scratch on game day—that's what separates a rough start from a bust. The talent was never wrong. The evaluation was."

## Common Confusion

Boom-or-Bust describes a draft profile—a player with high upside and high risk heading into the draft. Bust describes an outcome—a player who, after being drafted, did not deliver on the investment. A boom-or-bust prospect who hits is not a bust. The terms describe entirely different moments in a player's arc.
