## Definition

Burst describes a player's explosive first-step quickness—the immediate acceleration off the snap that creates separation before an opponent can react. Most visible in the first two to three steps: a receiver exploding off the line to beat press coverage, a pass rusher firing off before the tackle's hands engage, or a running back hitting the gap before the defensive line closes.

Burst is evaluated on tape and measured indirectly through the 10-yard split of the 40-yard dash and the vertical and broad jumps, which assess lower-body explosiveness.

In draft evaluation, burst is weighted heavily for positions where initial quickness determines success—pass rushers, slot receivers, and running backs who hit gaps before defenders can react.

## Example

"Watch the first two steps off the snap—already at the tackle's hip before the hand punch gets there. That's burst. That's why you can't wait on him in the third round."

## Common Confusion

Burst is not top-end speed. A player can have elite burst—explosive first steps creating immediate separation—and only average 40 speed. The 10-yard split of the 40-yard dash is the closest measurable to burst; the full 40 time measures something different.
