# Bump

## Short Definition

A coverage adjustment to pre-snap motion where each defender shifts one position over to maintain leverage on their receiver.

## Definition

Bump is a coverage adjustment to pre-snap motion where each defender shifts one position in the direction the receiver moved, maintaining the defense's original leverage structure despite the formation change. If a slot receiver motions from right to left, each defender on the affected side bumps one position to the left—the corner who was on the slot is now on the outside receiver, the safety picks up the former outside receiver's zone, and so on.

Without a Bump adjustment, motion creates free releases—a receiver can motion away from a press corner and release clean into space the defense wasn't covering. The Bump ensures the defense travels with the motion rather than allowing the offense to shift players into uncovered areas.

Bump communication happens fast. The adjustment must be called and executed before the quarterback snaps the ball. Missed Bump calls or late adjustments are how motion offenses create blown coverage before the ball is ever thrown.

## Example

"Slot receiver goes in motion left. Mike calls Bump—every defender shifts one position left. The corner who had the slot now has the outside receiver. The safety picks up the vacated slot alignment. Snap. Defense is in the right position because the Bump traveled with the motion."

## Common Confusion

Bump is confused with a rotation or coverage shift. A rotation moves players to different coverage zones. A bump moves every defender one position in the direction of the motion to maintain their relative leverage on the formation. The relationships between defenders and receivers stay the same; the positions on the field change.
