# Bubble Screen

## Short Definition

A quick horizontal throw to a slot receiver who catches the ball outside the formation with outside receivers blocking downfield.

## Definition

The bubble screen gets the ball to a slot receiver in space immediately after the snap. The outside receivers release downfield and block the nearest defenders—corners and safeties—before the ball arrives. The slot receiver catches the throw on a quick horizontal path and turns upfield into the space the blocks create.

The play is a perimeter run disguised as a pass. The blocking is the play; the throw is the mechanism. The slot receiver's job after the catch is to identify the first block, cut off it, and gain yards in the space beyond the perimeter defenders.

Bubble screens are most effective against defenses with poor perimeter leverage—corners who are aligned inside their receivers, safeties who are too deep to get to the perimeter quickly, or linebackers who are responsible for contain. When the numbers favor the offense on the perimeter (two blockers against one defender), the bubble is a positive play.

Bubble RPOs attach the bubble screen as a pass option to a run play. The quarterback reads a perimeter defender: if he plays the run, the bubble is thrown; if he expands to the bubble, the ball is handed off.

## Example

"Slot receiver catches it at the numbers with two blockers already in position. The corner never had a chance—by the time he realized it was a screen, the receiver was past him for eight yards."

## Common Confusion

Bubble screen and tunnel screen are different. A bubble screen throws the ball horizontally to a receiver who then turns upfield. A tunnel screen throws the ball to a receiver running through a lane created by linemen who have released and are leading the way. Different timing, different mechanics, different blocking structure.
