The Sugar Bowl (New Orleans), Orange Bowl (Miami), and Cotton Bowl (Dallas) followed similar models—local civic organizations creating football events that would attract visitors and national attention to their cities. These "New Year's Six" bowls retain the most prestige and the largest financial payouts for participating conferences.

For decades, the bowl system served as college football's de facto postseason, with national champions determined by polls rather than on-field results. Two teams could finish undefeated in different bowls and both claim a national championship based on the Associated Press or Coaches Poll—an arrangement that produced disputed championships and persistent arguments about which team was truly best. The Bowl Championship Series, introduced in 1998, attempted to solve this by creating a guaranteed title game between the top two poll-ranked teams. The College Football Playoff replaced the BCS in 2014 and expanded to 12 teams in 2024.

Bowl eligibility requires at least six wins in the regular season—a threshold that ensures most bowl participants have demonstrated competitive viability, though the proliferation of bowls has stretched that standard as the number of eligible teams has grown to meet the number of available games.
