## Definition

The boot is a play-action passing concept where the quarterback rolls away from the run fake—the run action goes one direction, and the quarterback boots to the opposite side—with a lead blocker protecting the rollout. The most common boot structure includes a pulling lineman or tight end leading around the edge to block the first defender the quarterback encounters on the backside. The lead blocker is the structural difference between a boot and a naked: the boot has protection on the rollout; the naked doesn't.

The boot works because run-fit defenders must honor the run action. A linebacker whose assignment is to fit the B-gap on a power run cannot simultaneously hold outside the formation to contain a boot rollout. If he fits the B-gap correctly, the boot side is vacated. If he holds outside to stop the boot, the run action has an unfit gap. The play design forces a choice before the snap is complete—the defense cannot correctly fit both threats simultaneously.

Routes on the boot are designed around the space the run flow vacates. The primary route is typically a tight end or crossing receiver dragging from the backside of the formation toward the quarterback's rollout direction—a short, easy completion against a defense that has committed its interior defenders to run flow. The back releasing to the flat in the rollout direction provides a secondary outlet. A vertical route on the far side is available if the coverage rotation to the run fake opens a single-high window.

The boot creates the most space when the run action is genuinely threatening—when the offense has run the ball effectively before calling the boot, and the defense's run-fit discipline is a result of earned respect rather than a scheme assignment they're half-committing to. A boot off a run game that the defense is ignoring produces no flow from the defense and no space for the rollout. The effectiveness of the play-action is proportional to the ground game's threat.

## Example

"Play action strong, boot weak—the linebackers all committed to the run fake. The quarterback rolls to the backside with the tight end dragging underneath and a pulling guard leading. The tight end is alone at 12 yards. Easy completion. The run fake did the work; the boot was the payoff."

## Common Confusion

Boot is often used interchangeably with naked. The distinction: a boot has a puller or a lead blocker on the backside. A naked has no protection—the quarterback rolls out completely unblocked. Both use play action, but one has a blocker leading the way.
