# Blitz

## Short Definition

Sending more defenders to rush the quarterback than the offense can block—trading coverage for immediate pressure that forces a quick or hurried throw.

## Definition

A blitz sends more defenders to rush the quarterback than the offensive line can block. The standard pass rush is four down linemen against five offensive linemen—protection has a one-blocker advantage. A blitz sends five, six, or more rushers, outnumbering the protection and creating at least one free rusher the quarterback must account for immediately or absorb.

The tradeoff is direct: every additional rusher is one fewer defender in coverage. A six-man blitz typically leaves five defenders covering four or five eligible receivers in man-to-man with no deep help. If the blitz gets home, the quarterback takes a sack or hurry before he can exploit the coverage. If it doesn't, the coverage is vulnerable.

The offense counters with hot routes—pre-determined quick throws to specific receivers designed to get the ball out before the extra rusher arrives. A quarterback who identifies the blitz pre-snap and has the right hot route can turn a blitz into a quick gain. The chess match between blitz design and protection identification is one of the most complex tactical interactions in football.

Blitzes come in many forms: corner blitz, safety blitz, linebacker blitz, zone blitz (where a pass rusher drops into coverage while a defensive lineman delays before rushing). The common thread is always more rushers than the protection can handle.

## Example

"Five blockers, six rushers—somebody is coming free. Watch the right guard: he has nobody to block. The linebacker off the edge is unblocked. The quarterback has about two seconds before that linebacker arrives. That's a blitz working exactly as designed."

## Common Confusion

Blitz doesn't mean aggressive defense or hard contact. It specifically means sending more rushers than the offense can block. A defense that plays press man coverage without extra rushers is not blitzing. The blitz is about rush count—more defenders attacking the quarterback than the protection can account for.
