# Big Board

## Short Definition

A scout or analyst's master ranking of draft prospects by overall talent, independent of team need or positional considerations.

## Definition

A big board is a scout's or analyst's master list of draft prospects ranked by overall talent evaluation—independent of which team needs the player, his positional value in the market, or where teams might actually pick him. It is the purest expression of how a scout grades prospects: player A is better than player B regardless of position or need.

Every NFL team maintains an internal big board. The order of names on that board, combined with positional value adjustments and team need overlays, drives the actual pick. When a team selects the player ranked highest on their board regardless of position, they are executing a Best Player Available strategy. When they deviate from the board to address need, they're making a different kind of draft decision.

Analysts publish their big boards as the foundational reference against which mock drafts are measured. A player who goes significantly earlier than his big board position is a reach; one who goes later is a steal. The big board is the baseline that gives draft analysis its vocabulary.

## Example

"The team took the cornerback at 11 when their own board had him 27th. That's not BPA—that's pure need overriding the big board. It might be right; it might not. But it's a deviation from the board and the draft community will grade it accordingly."

## Common Confusion

A big board and a mock draft are not the same thing. A big board ranks every prospect by talent. A mock draft predicts team selections. A player ranked 8th on the big board might be mocked to pick 22 because teams ahead of that pick don't need his position or have other priorities. The board measures talent; the mock predicts behavior.
