# Bear Front

## Short Definition

A defensive front with a 0-tech nose tackle and two 4i-tech defensive ends, designed to seal every interior gap with a down lineman.

## Definition

The Bear front stacks the interior of the defensive line—a nose tackle head-up on the center in 0-tech, and both defensive ends tight on the inside shoulder of each tackle in 4i-tech. Every interior gap from the center to the B-gap on each side is covered by a down lineman before the snap.

The design is explicitly anti-run. Interior zone schemes depend on offensive linemen reaching or releasing to the second level. In a Bear front, there's no path—every interior blocker has a man directly over them, and the linebackers play clean behind the pile.

The tradeoff is edge exposure. With ends tucked inside in 4i-tech, there's no traditional C-gap or D-gap defender. The linebackers have to own the perimeter in the run game, and the defense is vulnerable to bootlegs and naked rollouts.

## Example

"Bear front—0-tech on the center, 4i-tech on both tackles. Every interior gap is covered before the snap. Inside zone hits the A-gap, nose holds the double team, ends seal the B-gaps, linebackers flow clean. The ball carrier has nowhere to go inside and nowhere to bounce outside without hitting a free linebacker."

## Common Confusion

Bear is sometimes confused with an Okie or Tite front, which also have ends inside. The Bear specifically pairs a true 0-tech nose with 4i-tech ends, eliminating every interior gap. Tite fronts use similar end alignments but with different nose placements and gap assignments.
