# Ball Security

## Short Definition

The technique a ball carrier uses to protect the football from strips, punch-outs, and fumbles—the foundational skill for carrying the ball in any format.

## Definition

Ball security is the collection of techniques a ball carrier uses to prevent fumbles. The standard high-and-tight carry positions the ball at chest height with the tip of the ball in the palm, the fingers spread across the point of the ball, the forearm clamped to the body, and the elbow driving down to seal the ball against the ribs. Every contact point locks the ball against the body.

The technique degrades under fatigue and contact. A ball carrier who relaxes his grip after a hard hit or holds the ball away from his body to break a tackle gives defenders a surface to punch or strip. Defenders are taught specifically to attack the ball—punch the near side, rip from behind, strip from the top—and a ball carrier who isn't conscious of those threats invites the strip attempt.

Ball security becomes most critical in traffic, near the sideline, and at the goal line. Contact from unexpected angles—behind, from below—is where fumbles happen. Ball carriers who maintain their technique through every contact point, not just the initial hit, protect the ball when it matters most.

In flag football, ball security has a different emphasis. There's no tackling, but ball carriers must keep both flags accessible—covering or guarding flags is a penalty. The discipline is structural rather than physical, but the underlying principle of awareness and technique applies equally.

## Example

"Running back takes a hit from the safety while stretching for the goal line. The safety punches at the ball—it moves. The running back squeezes down with his forearm and re-secures before the ball hits the ground. That's ball security under pressure: the technique held when the body was stressed."

## Common Confusion

Ball security is not the same as carrying the ball high and tight. High-and-tight describes the carry position—where the ball sits on the body. Ball security is the active discipline of maintaining that position through contact, fatigue, and unexpected hit angles. A ball carrier who holds perfect high-and-tight technique before contact but relaxes after the initial hit has failed at ball security even though his carry looked correct. The fumble happens on the second or third contact point, not the first.
