## Definition

Bag is player slang for a player's collection of moves, techniques, and skills—the full repertoire they can draw on within their position. A receiver's route bag is the range of routes they can run with technical proficiency. A pass rusher's bag is the set of moves—speed rush, inside counter, swim, rip, bull rush—they can execute to beat blockers. A corner's coverage bag is the techniques they can apply across different situations and alignments.

The term comes from the broader cultural usage of bag to mean one's total skill set or professional capability, and maps cleanly onto football because the sport is highly technical and position-specific. Players and coaches are constantly evaluating whether someone has the techniques to handle the demands of a given scheme or matchup, and bag provides compact vocabulary for that assessment.

Coaches and analysts would describe the same concept as route tree, pass rush arsenal, or technique package—vocabulary that describes the same thing with more precision about what's inside it. Bag is the informal wrapper that signals a player has options rather than specifying which options they are.

The term has gained traction because it connects to how younger players and fans think about football as a skill game—not just physical talent but learned technique. A player who "has a bag" has done the work to develop tools; a player with a "limited bag" may be physically gifted but technically one-dimensional. ## Common Confusion

Bag describes the breadth and depth of a player's technical skill set—it is not the same as being good at their position. A player can be effective with a limited bag if they execute a few techniques at an elite level. A player with a deep bag has more options but may not deploy all of them consistently. Bag is about repertoire, not necessarily output.
