The linebacker is the primary force player—he sets the perimeter against outside runs, keeps outside leverage on blockers, and turns the ball carrier back inside toward the pursuing defense. His landmark is the outside hip of the last blocker in the box, and everything outside that landmark is his responsibility to eliminate. The Backer force designation matters because multiple defenders are near the edge on any given play. Without an explicit assignment, a corner, safety, and linebacker can all react to an outside run without any of them owning the edge—each expecting another to force. The Backer call gives one player unambiguous ownership before the snap. Backer force is most commonly set to the tight end side or in heavy personnel formations where the defense wants its linebacker physically engaged at the point of attack rather than holding in coverage. A linebacker with legitimate run-stop ability and the physical profile to engage tight ends and fullbacks at the edge is the prototypical Backer force player. When those physical conditions are met, the linebacker's proximity to the line of scrimmage makes him the most efficient edge setter. The relationship between the Backer force player and the safety behind him is the primary run-fit structure on the strong side. The Backer sets the edge and forces everything inside; the safety fills the alley behind him. If the Backer holds outside leverage, the safety reads the run through the outside blocker's release, finds the alley, and fills from depth into the cutback lane. The two assignments are complementary—the edge-setter and the alley-filler—and both depend on the Backer committing to the edge before the safety can commit to the alley. ## Example "Cover 3 to the tight end side—Backer force. Watch the linebacker maintain outside leverage on the tight end as the outside zone develops. Tight end tries to reach him. Linebacker fights through the reach, keeps his outside arm free. Run turns back inside to the pursuing linebackers. Backer set the edge; the rest of the defense filled behind it." ## Common Confusion Force designation (Backer, Sky, Cloud) tells you which player is responsible for setting the edge. It doesn't tell you the coverage.
