When an automatic first down penalty is enforced, the offense receives both the yardage gain from the penalty and a fresh set of four downs—as if it had just earned a first down through normal play. The down reset is guaranteed independent of whether the penalty yardage alone would have reached the line to gain. The most common automatic first down penalties are defensive personal fouls—roughing the passer, roughing the kicker, horse-collar tackle, facemask—and defensive pass interference in the NFL. When a penalty is marked off and the new spot happens to cross the first-down marker, it is a first down—but only because of geography, not because of a rule.
