## Definition

ATS—Against the Spread—describes a team's or bettor's record relative to the point spread rather than outright wins and losses. A team that is 8–4 ATS has covered the spread in eight of twelve games, regardless of their actual win-loss record. It is the standard metric for evaluating how teams perform relative to market expectations rather than in absolute terms.

ATS records expose the gap between a team's true performance and the public perception built into their spread. An underrated team consistently given too many points covers frequently; an overrated team the market prices too favorably struggles to cover. Teams playing with motivational advantages—revenge games, division stakes, facing heavy public action on the opponent—often cover at higher rates than their straight-up record would suggest.

Home and road ATS splits are especially tracked. Teams frequently perform differently against the spread at home versus on the road in ways that don't fully correlate with their home-field advantage in actual wins. Dome teams playing outdoor road games, cold-weather teams hosting warm-weather opponents in January, and teams with strong offensive line advantages in run-heavy conditions all create patterns that analysts use.

ATS language has entered broadcast coverage as betting has mainstreamed. "They're one-and-seven against the spread in their last eight road games" is now a standard analytical point in pregame shows, treating the market as a benchmark for performance evaluation rather than simply a wagering mechanism.

## Example

"They're 9–3 straight up but just 4–8 ATS. The market knows how good they are—you're not getting value betting them just because they win. You have to beat the number, not just the opponent."

## Common Confusion

A team's ATS record and win-loss record are entirely independent. A team can be 10–2 straight up and 4–8 ATS—winning games but consistently by less than the spread. Conversely a 6–6 team might be 9–3 ATS if the market consistently overestimates their opponents. ATS record measures performance against market expectations, not absolute quality.
