Arm talent describes a quarterback's natural throwing ability—the full range of physical gifts that allow him to deliver the football effectively across all situations. It includes velocity (how hard he throws), accuracy (where the ball goes), touch (the ability to vary arc and pace), and versatility (throwing from different stances, platforms, and arm angles when the pocket breaks down).

Arm talent is distinguished from arm strength by its breadth. A quarterback with elite arm strength who can only throw on a flat trajectory is limited at the NFL level where touch passes over linebackers and ball placement into tight windows require controlled velocity. True arm talent encompasses the full throwing toolkit.

The trait is evaluated on film through a specific lens: how does this quarterback throw in situations that stress the mechanics? The easy throws in rhythm are expected. The evaluation lives in off-platform throws under pressure, back-shoulder fades requiring precise placement, and deep balls that require the quarterback to trust his arm and his receiver simultaneously.

## Example

"Watch this throw—he's off his back foot, pressure in his face, and he drops it into a bucket 45 yards downfield. That's arm talent. Not just the velocity to reach it, but the arc, the placement, and the trust to attempt it under duress."

## Common Confusion

Arm talent and arm strength are not the same. Arm strength refers specifically to velocity—how hard a quarterback throws. Arm talent is broader: velocity, accuracy, touch on short routes, the ability to take something off or add spin, and the capacity to throw from off-platform angles when the pocket breaks down. A quarterback can have arm strength without full arm talent.
