# Anticipation Throw

## Short Definition

A pass released before the receiver has completed his break, thrown to where the receiver will be based on the quarterback's pre-snap read and timing.

## Definition

The anticipation throw is the highest-level execution in the passing game. The quarterback identifies the coverage pre-snap, confirms it with a post-snap read, and throws the ball before the receiver breaks—trusting the route tree and his own timing to put the ball in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

The alternative is a reaction throw: the quarterback waits for the receiver to come open, then throws. The reaction throw is safer but slower—defensive backs have time to recover, windows close, and sacks happen. The anticipation throw attacks the window before the defense can close it.

Quarterback footwork is the timing mechanism. A three-step drop is calibrated to deliver the ball at a specific moment in a receiver's route; a five-step drop at another. When the footwork and the route tree are synchronized, the ball arrives as the receiver finishes his break. When they're not, the throw either leads the receiver too far or arrives too late.

The difficulty is the commitment: the quarterback is throwing to a spot, not a player. If the receiver runs the wrong route, trips, or loses the timing, the ball goes nowhere.

## Example

"The receiver hasn't finished his break yet and the ball is already in the air. That's anticipation—the quarterback threw it on his back foot before the cut happened."

## Common Confusion

Anticipation throws are confused with inaccurate throws that happen to be caught. The distinction is intent and consistency. An anticipation throw is deliberately placed where the route is going, based on timing. A lucky inaccurate throw is different in both intent and repeatability.
