# American Football

## Short Definition

A team sport played on a rectangular field where two teams of players compete to advance the ball into the opponent's end zone to score points.

## Definition

American football is a team sport played between two sides of eleven players on a 100-yard field with end zones at each end. The offense has four downs to advance the ball 10 yards and earn a fresh set of downs. If they fail, possession transfers to the other team. If they succeed, they keep driving toward the opponent's end zone to score.

The sport operates in three phases: offense (the team with the ball trying to score), defense (the team trying to stop them), and special teams (kicking plays that start each half, follow scores, and handle fourth-down decisions). Each phase has its own personnel, concepts, and vocabulary.

The highest level of the sport is the National Football League (NFL), a 32-team professional league whose season culminates in the Super Bowl—one of the most-watched sporting events in the world. College football is played at nearly 900 programs across the United States and carries deep cultural weight, particularly in regions where it predates the NFL. High school football is the entry point for most players and communities.

American football exists in multiple formats. 11v11 tackle football is the traditional version played at the high school, college, and professional levels. Flag football replaces tackling with flag removal and is played in 5v5 and 7v7 formats—it is the fastest-growing version of the sport globally and will debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The sport's core structure is the same across formats: advance the ball, protect the end zone, and outscore the opponent.

## Example

"First and ten from the 35-yard line. Offense needs 10 yards to earn another first down, 65 yards to reach the end zone. Four downs, three phases, two teams. That's American football at its simplest."

## Common Confusion

American football and football (soccer) are different sports that share a name in different countries. American football uses an oblong ball, involves carrying and throwing, and uses hands. The sport this dictionary covers is American football in all its formats—11v11 tackle, flag, and 7v7.
