# ALLEY

## Short Definition

The pursuit lane between the defensive edge and the force player—the run-fit path for secondary defenders reading blocker releases on perimeter runs.

## Definition

The alley is the gap created between the outside edge of the defensive front and the widest interior defender. It's not a pre-snap alignment—it's the lane that opens during a run play, and the player responsible for that lane is called the alley player.

Typically, the alley player is a safety or cornerback depending on the coverage. In sky force looks, the safety owns the alley. In cloud coverage, the corner takes force and the safety fills the alley from depth. The alley defender has to read the block release of the near blocker—if the lineman or tight end releases inside, the alley is open and the defender attacks downhill.

Getting to the alley before the ball carrier does is the entire job. A defender who takes a bad angle or hesitates turns a two-yard run into a ten-yard gain.

## Example

"Safety has the alley—he's reading the tight end's release. The TE goes inside to block the linebacker. The alley opens between the TE's vacated spot and the edge. Safety attacks downhill into the gap, hits the ball carrier two yards past the line. That's the alley player doing his job: seeing the read, hitting the lane."

## Common Confusion

The alley is often confused with the C-gap or D-gap—pre-snap gap designations along the line of scrimmage assigned to specific defensive linemen. The alley is a post-snap pursuit lane, not a pre-snap gap. It opens dynamically based on where blockers release and where the run goes. A defender assigned to the alley doesn't have a fixed physical location before the snap; he has a read key that tells him when and where the alley will appear.
