## Short Definition

A defensive end on the wide outside shoulder of the tight end—the edge-territory alignment responsible for the D-gap and the primary arc pass-rush position.

## Definition

The 9-technique is the widest standard interior alignment—the defensive end positioned on the wide outside shoulder of the tight end, responsible for the D-gap at the edge of the formation. It places the defender in pure edge territory, with the tight end as the alignment landmark and the outside as his rush lane. The 9-tech is primarily a pass-rush alignment: from outside the tight end, he can arc directly to the quarterback without fighting through interior traffic.

On running plays, the 9-tech is the flat-side contain player. His job is to force everything back inside—if the run tries to bounce outside, the 9-tech turns it back to pursuit. He cannot over-pursue or take himself out of the edge; his value is in being an absolute outside wall that the ball carrier cannot get around. A 9-tech who gets reached or turned allows the cutback to bounce into open field with no pursuit angle available.

The 9-technique appears most frequently in nickel and dime packages in passing situations, and as a base edge alignment in defenses that want to get athletic rushers one-on-one against tight ends rather than against tackles. When a defense aligns a 5-tech to the strong side and a 9-tech to the weak side, the 9-tech is typically the designated pass rusher—his alignment is designed to win the arc to the quarterback, not to two-gap the tight end.

The distinction from the 7-technique is proximity: the 7-tech is on the inside shoulder of the tight end, responsible for the gap between the tackle and the tight end. The 9-tech is wider—outside shoulder of the tight end—committed to the edge with no interior responsibility.

## Example

"9-tech to the weak side—no tight end, so he's outside the tackle's hip. Pure arc rusher. Watch him take two steps and go vertical—he doesn't have to fight the tackle, he's already past him. That's why you put your best pass rusher in 9-tech."

## Common Confusion

The 9-tech is an alignment designation, not a position. Any edge player—a traditional defensive end, a rush linebacker, an outside backer—can align in 9-tech. The number describes where he is positioned relative to the tight end, not what role he plays or what his athletic profile is. A 250-pound pass rusher and a 275-pound run stopper can both align in 9-tech; what they do from there differs by assignment and personnel, not by the technique number.
