# 5v5 Format

## Definition

The 5v5 format is the standard for organized flag football at virtually every competitive level—from NFL FLAG to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Five players per side creates a game where every athlete on the field functions as both a skilled receiver and a coverage defender, with no positional specialists who play only one phase. The compact roster means individual performance has an outsized impact: there is no fifth-string defensive back to hide, and every matchup on the field is visible to the entire defense.

Field dimensions vary by organization. NFL FLAG uses a 30x70-yard field with 10-yard end zones; IFAF and Olympic competition use a 50x25-meter field. The NFL FLAG field's narrower width concentrates route combinations in a tighter horizontal space, rewarding route precision and creating congested coverage situations. The wider IFAF field opens the perimeter and gives receivers more room to work against trail coverage.

The 5v5 format's rules have been refined specifically for the player count. One designated rusher per play maintains pass pressure without overwhelming the offense with multiple rushers who outnumber the available protection. The 7-second pass clock provides a structural backstop when no rusher crosses the line. No-run zones near the end zone and midfield eliminate the most physically dangerous contact situations that occur when all five defenders converge on a ball carrier in tight space.

Tactically, 5v5 rewards route combinations that create structural conflicts against man coverage—bunches, stacks, crossing routes, and switch releases that use the limited space to free receivers through geometry rather than blocking. The offense has four eligible receivers on every passing play; the defense has four coverage defenders. The chess match between route combinations and coverage assignments, compressed into a fraction of a full-field football game, is the tactical core of competitive 5v5 play.

## Common Confusion

5v5 and flag football are not synonyms. 5v5 is the most common competitive format, but flag football also exists in 4v4, 7v7, and 8v8 formats with meaningfully different rules, field dimensions, and tactical structures. NFL FLAG, IFAF, and recreational leagues each have format-specific rules that do not transfer automatically between player counts.
