## Definition

The 53-man roster is the hard cap on active players an NFL team carries through the regular season, set by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Teams begin the preseason with 90-man rosters, using four preseason games to evaluate players before cutting to 53 by the roster deadline—typically the Tuesday after the final preseason game.

The 53-man roster is the central resource management constraint in the NFL. Every roster decision—draft pick, free agent signing, trade, waiver claim—competes for one of 53 spots. Teams must balance starters, backups, specialists, and developmental players across every position group within that limit.

Players cut from the 53 can be claimed on waivers by other teams or, if unclaimed, signed to the practice squad. Injured players may be placed on injured reserve rather than occupying an active roster spot, with specific CBA rules governing return timelines and short-term IR designations.

"They used three picks on the offensive line this draft. All three have to earn a spot—the 53-man roster doesn't expand because you drafted well. Somebody already here doesn't make it."

## Common Confusion

The 53-man roster is distinct from the practice squad, which allows teams to carry additional developmental players who practice but do not dress for games. The 53 is the active game-eligible roster; the practice squad is a separate developmental roster with its own CBA rules and player limits.
