# 5-tech

## Short Definition

A defensive end on the outside shoulder of the tackle—the standard even-front edge alignment responsible for C-gap and setting the edge against outside runs.

## Definition

The 5-technique places the defensive end on the outside shoulder of the offensive tackle—over the C-gap, at the traditional base position for a 4-3 defensive end. It is the most common edge alignment in even-front football and the standard position from which most defensive ends operate in NFL and college defenses that run even fronts as their base.

From the outside shoulder of the tackle, the 5-tech has natural leverage on the C-gap. He can attack inside through the gap, set the edge against outside runs by maintaining outside arm freedom, or arc around the tackle on pass rush. The tackle's outside shoulder is his landmark—everything he does on a given snap is in relation to that reference point. On a base down run, he's keeping outside arm free and forcing the ball back inside. On passing downs, he's using the tackle's weight distribution and leverage cues to determine his rush lane.

In 4-3 defenses, the strong-side 5-tech is typically paired with a 3-tech on the same side—the 5-tech takes the C-gap, the 3-tech takes the B-gap—creating two one-gap penetrators on the same side of the ball who cannot both be double-teamed simultaneously. The weak-side 5-tech operates more independently, often as the designated pass rusher in nickel packages where athletic ends replace heavier run-stoppers.

The distinction between a 5-tech and a 9-tech matters in tight-end formations. When a tight end is present, the 5-tech stays over the tackle's outside shoulder—the C-gap between the tackle and the tight end. When there's no tight end, the 5-tech is the widest interior alignment, and the C-gap becomes the space outside the tackle entirely. The position shifts physically but the alignment rule—outside shoulder of the tackle—stays constant.

## Example

"5-tech to the strong side, tight end attached. He's got the C-gap—outside the tackle, inside the tight end. Outside zone runs right at him. He sets the edge, keeps outside arm free, forces the ball back inside to the linebacker. That's gap integrity at the 5-tech."

## Common Confusion

The 5-tech is sometimes confused with the 6-technique, which is head-up on the tight end, or the 4i-technique, which is on the inside shoulder of the tackle. The 5 is specifically the outside shoulder of the tackle—wider than the 4i, narrower than the 6. On the same play, a 5-tech and a 6-tech are in entirely different gaps with different blocking assignments coming at them.
