# 4i-tech

## Short Definition

A defensive end on the inside shoulder of the offensive tackle—a B-gap alignment used in Tite fronts and Bear packages that seals interior gaps before the snap.

## Definition

The 4i-technique places the defensive end tight on the inside shoulder of the offensive tackle—directly over the B-gap, not the C-gap that a standard 5-tech would own. The "i" designates inside; this end is responsible for the B-gap and is positioned to attack it directly without having to win the edge. In most fronts, the 4i-tech is a gap-control player, not a pass-rush arc rusher—his value is sealing the interior against zone run schemes and preventing the ball from finding the B-gap cleanly.

The alignment is compact and interior-focused. The tackle can't release to the second level without first clearing the 4i-tech from the B-gap, which forces a sustained block and delays the tackle's combination assignment. Against outside zone, the tackle has to work even harder to reach a defender who is already inside his shoulder—the 4i creates an artificial base alignment problem that outside zone can't easily solve with a simple reach block.

4i-tech appears most frequently in Tite fronts and Bear packages, where both defensive ends are in 4i alignment simultaneously—one on each tackle—while a 0-tech nose occupies the center. This creates a defender in every interior gap: 0-tech in both A-gaps, 4i-tech in both B-gaps. The offense faces a wall of gap-filling linemen before the linebackers even engage. Against zone run schemes that depend on horizontal displacement and combination blocks, a front that fills every gap before the second level is reached can stop the run at the line of scrimmage without requiring linebacker intervention.

In passing situations, the 4i-tech's interior alignment gives him a shorter rush path to the quarterback than a 5-tech or 9-tech—he's already between the tackle and guard, one direct step inside from a clean interior rush lane.

## Example

"Both ends are in 4i—inside shoulders of both tackles, B-gaps on each side covered. 0-tech on the nose. That's a Tite front. Inside zone has nowhere to go. Every gap has a body in it before the linebackers even read their keys."

## Common Confusion

The 4i-tech is commonly confused with the standard 4-technique, which is head-up on the tackle. The 4i is inside—on the inside shoulder, over the B-gap—while the 4-technique is directly over the tackle with potential two-gap responsibility. They look similar at a glance but have entirely different gap assignments and blocking challenges. A 4i-tech is a B-gap penetrator; a 4-technique is a two-gap reader. The distinction matters for both the defensive lineman's assignment and the offensive line's blocking scheme.
